No, I wouldn’t recommend duct taping your cell phone to your ear, but I would recommend something, because as of today it is illegal in Oregon to chat on your cell phone while driving. If you decide to chance it anyway, and get caught, it could mean a $142 fine.
So what do you do? Look for a hands free headset, or one of those kooky looking bluetooth gadgets that wrap aroud your ear. Best Buy had some on sale today for $29 (I picked up the last 2 – sorry). But they had many more brands to choose from with an average price tag of about $50 – $75.
Where do you go look? Although I haven’t gone and checked it out myself, I would Continue reading ‘Hands Free Chatting’

Happy New Years Forest Grove. Here’s to a happy and prosperous 2010.
And – if by chance you celebrate a “wee” bit too much – remember that rides on TriMet buses and MAX light rail will be free of charge starting at 8 p.m. Yellow, Green and Blue line trains will continue running every 30 minutes until 3 a.m.
Don’t chance it, get a free ride home.
Have fun tonight, and be safe.

Forest Grove UPS Store
I finally got out to visit some of my old neighbors in the shopping center yesterday. For the restaurants like Quiznos and Cornerstone, who rely so much on Pacific University traffic, this time of year can be a bit slow. I was happy to find they are both still there, along with La Sierra, and seemingly doing ok.
But imagine my surprise to see the UPS Store with a Gone Out of Business sign in the window. The place was completlely gutted! I guess, as so many of us small business owners have already experienced, the tough economy got them a little behind in the rent, and the landlords decided to pull the plug.
You would think, espcially at this time of the year, that a shipping business would be booming. But what most people did not realize was that The UPS Store was a locally owned and operated franchise. As I was chatting with my old friend Nick, manager of Quiznos, he told me a story of an irrate customer who became very flustered Continue reading ‘UPS Store is now closed.’

Just off Cornelius Pass and Baseline in Hillsboro
I wondered if it might snow today when I saw the red sky this morning during the sunrise. Remember the old saying, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight? Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning” ? Proved true today. I just don’t think people had any idea of how much snow we would get. I just measured 5″ out on my deck, and it’s still coming down.
I saw my first clue this afternoon. “It’s snowing!” the Facebook message said, from a friend in Hillsboro. Sure enough within a few moments, it was snowing here in the Grove too. I jetted off to Continue reading ‘It’s Snowing !’
It’s funny that I still remember all the rumors floating around town back in 2007. Albertson’s was coming, then Haagens. I heard that Foreign Car Specialists and JD Pence was going to become a Rite-Aid. That was a “done deal”. Well – they’re empty, and I don’t see a Rite-Aid. I actually do feel sorry for the little Doggie Daycare that moved in there though. They didn’t last very long.
And then there was WalMart. You know, it’s been almost 3 years now, and I still don’t see a WalMart either. Oh I know it’s coming. I see them moving dirt around over there. But it’s not done. And it has been 3 years now. Personally, I could Continue reading ‘Where’s Wal-(mart)? and other town rumors.’

2009 Twinkle Light Parade
Everybody’s Hometown Band geared up to join the 2009 Twinkle Light Parade this year. Wow, what a cold night. We had just performed at Zoo Lights that Tuesday, and I thought it was cold then. Was I ever wrong. What is it about a brass instrument that transmits the coldness so well? My fingers froze in slide position 3. I think I’ll put a new pair of gloves on my Santa List for 2010. Do they make fleece trombones?
But it was fun! Thank You Forest Grove for putting on such a really cool parade. We will definately be back next year.

Welcome to Forest Grove Live. Or should I say – welcome back. I originally published this little blog way back in February of 2006. The main intention was to provide a way for local FG residents to stay up to date on what was happening in our little neck of the woods. At the time, I was pretty involved with the community as I was running a little computer repair shop. I had friends and customers who were part of the school district, city council, the university, Theatre in the Grove, as well as many of the restaurants and little shops that make up the core of Forest Grove. I felt I had a pretty good handle on Continue reading ‘Hello Forest Grove!’
